AMATHOLE DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY URGES COMMUNITIES TO JOIN “ZINGCE - TAKE PRIDE” CAMPAIGN TO COMBAT WATER INFRASTRUCTURE VANDALISM
ADM HEADQUARTERS | TUESDAY, 02 SEPTEMBER 2025
Amathole District Municipality (ADM) continues to face significant challenges due to vandalism of its water and sanitation infrastructure across the district. Criminals are targeting water pipelines, electrical components, valves, pump stations and treatment facilities which severely disrupt the reliable supply of clean water and sanitation services. ADM routinely repairs or replaces damaged infrastructure, but these efforts are often undermined as vandalism persists shortly thereafter.
To address this growing issue, ADM has deployed security services to protect its infrastructure however security provision does not come cheap and is often at the cost of expanding and scaling service provision. ADM believes that combating infrastructure vandalism necessitates another approach – one that prioritises community awareness, vigilance, engagement and public participation. Therefore, ADM calls on communities to take an active role in the ZINGCE - Take Pride campaign to prevent these criminal activities. This campaign is a vigorous communication initiative to raise awareness about the detrimental impact of water infrastructure vandalism. Through this educational campaign, residents are urged to take pride in their infrastructure and be equipped with early detection and reporting mechanisms to fight vandalism to protect the systems that support their water and sanitation services.
“Vandalism is a crime that robs our communities of essential services and strains municipal resources,” said ADM Executive Mayor, Cllr Anele Ntsangani. “A call to communities to play their part in this problem isn’t about the municipality avoiding accountability but rather the opposite, it is ensuring that accountability happens in real time and ADM does not operate in isolation”.
We encourage the public to report vandalism, theft, or illegal water connections to our toll-free municipal hotline at 0800 236 236 or immediately contact the police on 10111. Together we can safeguard our water infrastructure and ensure reliable service delivery for all. [ENDS]
