Safety Tips

  • The Amathole District Municipality is in the process of establishing the district tourism safety forum. The mandate of the forum will be to develop a strategy that will address and ensure the safety of tourists.

Safety Tips

  • Make sure that you keep your valuables in a bag
  • Keep your cameras, and cellphones inside a pocket
  • Carry small cash for the day, and never carry large amounts of money
  • Watch out for strangers who offer to help at the ATM when your card is stuck because they may swipe your card instead
  • Never give a stranger your pin code
  • If you have a problem with your bank card rather go inside the bank if you are near and it is open and call the number that is provided at the ATM and cancel your card by yourself
  • Do not panic, remain calm
  • Do not give money to strangers or children because they can attack you and want more
  • Do not go out alone at night
  • Travel as a group and make sure that you stick to your group members on busy streets
  • Only ask a policeman/traffic officer for directions if you get lost

What to do when you are attacked/ hijacked

  • Try to remain calm, and do not panic
  • Think quickly because your mind will be your first defence
  • Evaluate the situation, look to see if there is someone around, and see if you can run and make as much noise as possible
  • Do not resist when being attacked unless you are able to escape
  • Be prepared to let your bag/ package go if someone tries to snatch it –bags and packages can be replaced but your life can not
  • Cooperate and try to stall your attacker until help arrives
  • If you are unable to escape, make sure that you concentrate on your attacker’s  identity and try to notice eyes, age, height, hair, colour, face, scars, tattoos, limps, clothes, speech accents and patterns
  • Try to leave your finger prints wherever you can, also leave small personal items behind, such as an earring, lip stick, scuff link- anything that can be traced back to you
  • Report the attack as soon as possible

Safety on the beach

  • Never swim alone
  • Swim only at designated bathing areas patrolled by lifeguards
  • Do not swim when drunk
  • Do not leave your belongings unattended
  • Place your litter in the bins provided and leave the beach as you would like to find it - clean
  • Do not take or break glass containers on the beach
  • Do not walk alone on an isolated beach

Safety at the hotel

  • Never leave your luggage unattended
  • Store your valuables in the hotel safety deposit box
  • Lock your room at all times, whether you are in the hotel or out
  • If someone knocks, check who it is before opening
  • Hand the keys in at the desk when you leave the hotel
  • Be observant when entering parking areas
  • Carry your passport and/or travel documents only if you have to, alternatively carry certified copies

Safety When Jogging or Cycling

  • Jog or cycle with a companion
  • Restrict your activities to familiar locations and avoid secluded areas
  • Avoid jogging or cycling in the evenings
  • Always face the oncoming traffic
  • If you think you are being followed, go to the nearest house and call the police
  • Wear brightly coloured clothing to improve visibility
  • Carry a whistle or shrill alarm to summon help if needed
  • Vary your route and routine
  • Stay away from bushes and alleys where attackers might hide
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and be alert

Safety in the car

  • Do not leave any items on the seat, place them in the boot
  • Never pick up strangers or hitchhikers
  • Wind your windows up or leave a slight gap
  • Should you observe suspicious persons at a red traffic light at night, it would be acceptable to proceed carefully, provided there are no other vehicles
  • Do not stop and rest on deserted roads
