The Amathole District Municipality (ADM) has been severely affected with an extensive drought, and dams in several towns have run dry. The district was declared a drought disaster area by the Minister of Water Affairs and Environment in July 2009. The situation is serious and the ADM is hard-pressed to find alternative water sources for the affected communities such as Adelaide, Bedford, Hogsback, Cathcart, Chintsa, Kei Mouth and Dutywa. Water has to be trucked in and Jo-jo tanks are being filled up and thus far it has cost the ADM close on R30 million. Boreholes are being commissioned where possible to supplement the water supply. The ADM is trying to manage the situation the best it can under very trying circumstances. Citizens of the district can make a major contribution in conserving water. Please find attached a newsletter that will be included in the next account statements and which will give further tips on saving water. The ADM will also be undertaking an educational water conservation campaign at various communities and schools in the district within the next few weeks – watch out for the “Tapman”. Please remember to report all water leaks to the ADM’s sharecall number 0860105789. Read More.....
