In its efforts to carry out the national government’s employment creation plan, Amathole District Municipality [ADM] observed the call to contribute to the Expanded Public Works Programme [EPWP]  in 2013, in line with the then expected 29,4% targets aligned to baseline allocation, that is, the programmes that are mainstreamed into normal mandates of the public sector.

ADM is one of the few district municipalities throughout the Eastern Cape that is actively implementing EPWP projects and has improved immensely in reporting and expenditure to National Departments of Treasury and Public Works, respectively.

In Amahlathi alone, 200 community members including youth, have been benefitting from various projects currently being implemented throughout the local municipality, while in Mbhashe and Mnquma a combined 3000 job opportunities have been created.

ADM EXECUTIVE MAYOR LAUNCHES A MUTLIMILLION NGQAMAKHWE WATER SCHEME PROJECT

MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ADM EXECUTIVE MAYOR LAUNCHES A MUTLIMILLION NGQAMAKHWE WATER SCHEME PROJECT

FRIDAY, 04 NOVEMBER 2016

On Wednesday 2
nd of November 2016, Amathole District Municipality (ADM) Executive Mayor, Cllr Winnie Nomfusi Nxawe launched phase 1 of the Ngqamakhwe Regional Water Scheme at Hebe-Hebe (Komkhulu) in ward 15 .

The R58.8 million worth phase 1 is part of a multimillion project that will supply water to 16 668 beneficiaries and 2778 households in wards 13, 14, 15 and 16. An additional R264 million has already been allocated for phase 2 and 3, for the benefit of over 33 800 beneficiaries in wards 7, 13, 14, 16, 18 and 20 of Mnquma Local Municipality.

Speaking to hundreds of community members in attendance Nxawe said “we are here driven by our mandate of supplying water and sanitation across the district. We are also here to fulfil your needs as you were faithful on the 3rd of August by voting us into power.”

She further made a plea with communities to look after the infrastructure .”If you see a leaking tap, immediately contact your municipality so it can be attended to in order to prevent water wastage” said Nxawe.
Accepting the project on behalf of the Hebe-Hebe community, local Chief iNkosi Mbangeni, Aah Zanozinzo!, said the inclusive approach by government which recognizes traditional leadership is noted by traditional councils and if it continues, the ruling party will enjoy the support of traditional councils come next elections. “I stand here to accept and appreciate this construction work handed over by the ADM today. I have no doubt that it will change the lives of our people for the better. Women will no longer walk long distances to fetch water all thanks to the ADM,” said Mbangeni.

The launch is an integral part of Mayor Nxawe’s “100 days program in office.” An array of activities have been scheduled up to the 02nd of December 2016 wherein the Executive Mayor is expected to table what the council has done in the 100 days in office.

Concluding her speech the ADM Executive Mayor further encouraged communities to use water sparingly as the drought situation is still rife in ADM and the entire country.

Meanwhile, ADM Executive Mayor has launched #OperationMaliphale which means “move with speed” at Alice which is situated in Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality on Thursday 03 November. The Executive Mayor’s “Call to Action” is in tandem with the Premier Masualle’s Integrated Service Delivery Model popularly known as Masiphathisane. #OperationMaliphale means ADM will now spend a lot of time in communities than in boardrooms, through the municipality’s satellite offices. On a weekly basis, ADM delegation will visit various communities, targeting service delivery ‘hotspots’, to take municipal services to the door-step of  communities particularly those situated in the smaller towns where ADM does not have satellite offices.
