FOR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION
ADM TO HOST WATER INDABA ON 05 - 07 FEBRUARY 2020
THEME: “CREATING A SUSTAINABLE DISTRICT TOWARDS THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE"
As a Water Services Authority, Amathole District Municipality (ADM) is required among other areas, to ensure access to efficient, affordable, economical and sustainable water services to its consumers. Armoured with Vision 2058, which primarily envisages to establish the municipality as a smart-rural-district, ADM will be hosting a two day Water Indaba as part of its strategic move towards positioning the municipality as an effective, efficient and sustainable water and sanitation services providing organisation.
The Indaba will among other areas zoom in on forth industrial revolution aligned and/or appropriate mechanisms for provision of water services to its communities including its industries in the near future while simultaneously looking for solutions on the challenges besetting the current water and sanitation services provision for the district.
Through its 5 year Municipal Turn Around Strategy (MTAS), ADM has conducted a number of studies and assessments on its water services delivery model, mostly with a particular focus on challenges encountered in discharging its legislative mandate of providing water services. In addition, various assessments done through water sector-specific instruments such as the Municipal Strategic Self-Assessments, the Regulatory Performance Measurement System, the Blue Drop and Green Drop assessments and the Risk-Based Assessments for Municipal Waste Water Treatment have amongst other issues indicated that the current mode of water services operation is in significant decline. It has also become evident that like for many of its counterparts within the country, the biggest challenge faced by ADM is that of the sustainable operation of the water business and not the ability to implement new capital infrastructure. Furthermore, climate change has had a devastating impact on ADM’s ability to provide water services in an effective manner with the District experiencing intense drought over the past three years which has numerously had it declared, nationally, as a disaster area. A factor that has crippled the district in its efforts to provide reliable water and sanitation services with dire implications.
The Indaba will further sought for long-term solutions that will re-engineer the current and future approaches to quality and sustainable water and sanitation services.
Objectives of the Indaba
The contemplated Water Indaba therefore has the following objectives:
- Define and outline vision for water and sanitation services at ADM
- Identification of novel means to ensure sustainable service delivery to communities and industry
- Clearly outline the model for the provision of water and sanitation services, including the accompanying funding model
- Identification of potential sustainable solutions for service provision
- Formulation of proposals for policy amendments
The media is thus invited to be part of the ADM’s journey into unfolding these exchange of ideas aimed at propelling the district forward in its quest towards sustainable water and sanitation provision for its communities and industries as well as fight against climate change.
