| There are few places in the world where the complicated concept of a "Frontier" can be better shown then in the Eastern Cape. For 100 years (1779 - 1878) the Xhosa people put up a tenacious resistance to European encroachment and the evidence of this struggle still exist in many evocative sites. No area in Southern Africa, and possibly the world, is there such a density of military and mission sites. To these have been added memorials to the modern struggle victims, as so many of the leaders have their roots in the Eastern Cape. The "Frontier" can be explored as more then just a struggle for the land or as a collection of military sites, missions and grave. It encompasses an era of social, religious interactions and economic change and the evidence is there for those with eyes to see. Where were the forts situated? What did the mission's contribute? How did these affect settlement patterns and lifestyles? Visit the sites, find out more about them and make your own judgements. Heritage sites, which can be seen on routes, encompasses per-colonial life, an era of conflict, mission and educational work ad the achievements of individuals. They are evocative, not only in terms of the past, but also in deepening an understanding of the present. | |
