Amathole Heritage Initiative

The Amathole Heritage Initiative is a project of the Amathole District Municipality, the largest of the six district municipalities that make up South Africa's Eastern Cape province.

This initiative aims to promote and develop the heritage resources of the district through the establishment of a heritage route, the preservation of heritage sites and raising awareness of Amathole's cultural and historical assets.

The Amathole Heritage Route is made up of four sub-routes. These are the Maqoma, Sandilem Phalo and Makana routes.

INTRODUCTION
The Amathole District Municipality (ADM) area of jurisdiction has rich history and heritage that consist of various layers – pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial.

The available heritage resources in the district have socio-cultural, spiritual and non-spiritual, historical and political value and meaning that make them have intangible significance for different people at various levels.

Though the ADM area of jurisdiction has rich history and heritage there are no declared heritage sites except those that were declared during the time of the National Monument Council which are merely about settlers' heritage.

MISSION STATEMENT
To strive for comprehensive production of the post-apartheid memorial landscapes, heritage resources management and transformation in the district for present and future generations, and implement a cogent, dynamic and imaginative strategy for safeguarding the available heritage resources in the district.

VISION
To be a trend setter, innovative and creative Heritage Unit with regard to heritage resources management in the province and possible in the country, and promote sustainable and coordinated development that take into cognizance heritage matters.
